Monument record 11037 - Demolished Medieval or Post Medieval Houses, Western Seating Bank Amphitheatre

Please read our .

Summary

The 1871-3 town plan of Chester, shows the area to the west of the former St John's House, and the north part of the former amphitheatre, to be covered with houses that were of either medieval or post medieval date. These houses were demolished some time before 1929, when this land had been intended for the construction of a new road which did not materialise. Note that a group of medieval features were excavated in the area of the former western seating bank of the amphitheatre (CHER 11038), and the excavators speculated that these may have been related to either the buildings showing on the nineteenth century town plan, or their predecessors.
