Summary

St John's Priory is one of the names given in the nineteenth century to a house which stood immediately south-east of Bishop Peploe's house overlooking the river, with access from Little St John St. The building is depicted as a simple rectangular block on Lavaux's 1745 plan of the city, and had been demolished by the time the first edition of the OS First edition was published.

Full Description

St John's Priory is one of the names given in the nineteenth century to a house which stood immediately south-east of Bishop Peploe's house overlooking the river, with access from Little St John St. It was bought in 1801 by Elizabeth Penson Quincey, mother of the writer Thomas De Quincy, who left accounts of the building (1, 2, 3).

The building is depicted as a simple rectangular block on Lavaux's 1745 plan of the city (5). The house had been demolished by the time the first edition of the OS First edition was published (1874) (4).
