Full Description

Castle House, 23 Castle St., is a mid-eighteenth century fronted town house, with a sixteenth century core. The building is of two storeys, is of Flemish bond Brown brick, with grey slate roofs and a single pitch roof sloping away from the facade. Some elements of the interior date to the fifteenth century, and appear to have been reused. Please see the linked listed building record for structural detail (1).

A survey carried out in 1986 confirmed a date of early eighteenth century for the facade representing a two storey, four bay building. Behind the Georgian front there is an earlier timber framed building of two distinct ranges, one parallel to the street of possible 16th century date and another running perpendicular to it (2). The range parallel to the street consists of two rooms on each storey with an eighteenth century staircase providing access to the first floor. To the rear is the second range comprising two rooms on each storey also of a late sixteenth century date but not attached to the first until a later date (2).
