Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the site of the former warehouse in 2003 recorded evidence of at least one sandstone structure predating the fabric of the 18th century warehouse.
The evidence consisted of two parallel sandstone features [context 36, 37] within trench 1 of the excavation on the south east facing side of the workhouse. Both features consisted of large sandstone blocks bonded with hard grey mortar. Further evidence of a sandstone structure of a similar construction was also recorded below the walls of the workhouse in trench 5 to the north of trench 1. (1)
