Full Description
Construction of the Tarvin by-pass in 1983-4 involved the disturbance of a large area of pasture land around the W & S sides of the village. Before, during & after the road was built the area of the SW arm in particular was intensively walked. Finds consist of 17th-19th century tableware, utilitarian black glazed redware containers & clay tobacco pipes. Also sherds of medieval pottery - pink/white hollow wares & a red/grey ware dish or bowl. Material could represent rubbish collected from the village & cast on the fields or may mark the remnants of some earlier occupation on the periphery of the present settlement. Post medieval pottery was concentrated between SJ 485663 & 491662 (1).
