Summary

St Thomas’ National School for girls is first recorded as a single long rectangular building on an east-west alignment to the south of St Thomas’ Church on the OS Town plans of the late 19th century. By the start of the 20th century the school had almost doubled in size forming a loose E shape and by the 1960s it had formed a quadrangular shape. The building is still in use as a school today. British National Schools were set up in the 19th century to provide elementary education to poor children following the teachings of the Church of England, they charged a small fee.

Full Description

St Thomas’ National School for girls is first recorded as a single long rectangular building on an east-west alignment to the south of St Thomas’ Church on the OS Town plans of the late 19th century. (1) By the start of the 20th century the school had almost doubled in size forming a loose E shape and by the 1960s it had formed a quadrangular shape. The building is still in use as a school today. (2)

An air raid shelter was stationed here during World War II. (4)
