Full Description
The Diocesan House, formerly part of the Ellesmere Canal Company Offices and Canal Tavern, consists of a front office portion built around 1790 and a rear wing (the tavern) built c.1815. It is of brown brick with a painted stucco front and a grey slate roof. The Raymond Street frontage is two storeys. The ground floor has a round-arched sash of 9-panes plus radial-bar fan in each bay; porch forming single-storey right wing has 5 stone steps to quarter-landing; 1 step to doorway in Tuscan case in side of main block. A rusticated round-arched opening to flight of 13 stone steps down to Tower Wharf forms a left wing. (1)
