Summary

The late medieval Bars on Boughton Road was erected with the purpose of controlling access into the medieval city of Chester and formed a substantial stretch of wall across the road with a toll gate beneath and a parapet and wall walk above. It did not form part of a continuous wall circuit, however.

The late medieval Bars on Boughton Road was erected with the purpose of controlling access into the medieval city of Chester and formed a substantial stretch of wall across the road with a toll gate beneath and a parapet and wall walk above. It did not form part of a continuous wall circuit, however. (1)

The toll gate was demolished in 1770 (2)
