House of correction, for the imprisonment of criminals, recorded on 18th and 19th century maps to the rear of property on Upper Northgate Street. (1-9)

A house of correction is further documented on Upper Northgate Street and may be the same structure. The Chester House was built in 1575 and stood opposite the Northgate Gaol and dealt with offenders against the Poor Law (10)
