Full Description

During the excavations to the rear of 11 - 15 Castle St. between 1976 and 1978 (Mansio site), a series of eighteenth century cellars were recorded (1). A detailed examination was not feasible, but the excavators do state that 'it was possible to detect the remains of fifteenth century and perhaps earlier masonry in their fabric. The lower parts of the cellars were rock-cut and so all vestiges of earlier levels had been removed for a distance of 9 - 10m back from the street.' A few sherds of unstratified nineteenth century pottery was also reported (1).
