Full Description
Presumably originally a dwelling, extensively reconstructed as retail premises. The original building probably dates from the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. It has eighteenth century modifications and the present front was added circa 1900. Mock timber framing at the the front, but the internal timber framing is original, but extensive remodelling has interrupted the integrity of the earlier structure At the rear the building is of brick and the roof is of Welsh slate. It is 4 sories tall and the upper windows are leaded (1).
During repairs to the exterior rendering, parts of a stone wall were revealed on the southern elevation. This may be part of Macclesfield castle which occupied the same site (3).
