Summary

Chester Northgate station was open in 1875 by the Cheshire Lines Committee as the passenger service station on the Manchester line. A second line from Wrexham, operated by the Great Central Railway, was added in 1888 leading to the station. The station had two platforms much of which was covered by two pitched spans. The main station building on the western platform included a ticket office, waiting and refreshment rooms, toilets, a parcels office and accommodation for the staff. In 1948 the railways were nationalised and the station became part of British Railway’s London Midland Region. By the 1950s the station had been reduced in size with fewer trains running on both the goods and passenger services as the lines moved away from steam services. The station was closed completely in 1969 although the line continued to operate for some time after.
