Summary

The Chester to Holyhead line was opened to Bangor in 1848, later extended to Holyhead in 1850. It was operated by the London and North Western Railway Company and formed an extension to their existing Chester to Crewe line. It was also linked to the Chester to Shrewsbury line at Saltney, entering Chester via the Dee Bridge and the Roodee viaduct. The main engineer was Robert Stephenson. Much of the line was built by the Shrewsbury and Chester Railway although it was later taken over by the London and North Western Railway Company.

Full Description

The Chester to Holyhead line was opened to Bangor in 1848, later extended to Holyhead in 1850. It was operated by the London and North Western Railway Company and formed an extension to their existing Chester to Crewe line. It was also linked to the Chester to Shrewsbury line at Saltney, entering Chester via the Dee Bridge and the Roodee viaduct. The main engineer was Robert Stephenson.
