Full Description
Archaeological investigations as part of a major redevelopment of the Hunter Street/Princess Street area identified several phases of medieval and later activity.
Archaeological investigations at Hunter Street School in 1981 identified a probable medieval drain in trench 7 of the excavations. The drain [F32] cut an earlier build of a soil on an east-west alignment. It was constructed using a base of flat sandstone slabs with two parallel walls of neat small blocks of masonry and capped with more irregularly shaped slabs. The drain was filled with silt containing a few sherds of 15th-16th century pottery.
To the north of the drain, and contemporary with it, there was a substantial rubble surface [373] set on a foundation of more rubble. (1)
