Full Description
<1> Chester Archaeology, 1980, Princess Street Excavations: Medieval and post medieval features (Unpublished Report). SCH6806.
Following the demolition of an earlier, probably medieval, stone cellar evidence of a sandstone foundation feature was constructed to the rear of the present library site. Although dating evidence was not discussed the later features are directly comparable to structures recorded on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
The earlier phase of activity on the site comprised the construction of a stone kerb like structure [F23] consisting of line of substantial sandstone blocks about two or three courses high with an exterior face to the west with a rubble fill and interpreted as a sandstone platform.
By the 19th century traces of a half basement were encountered comprising several foundation walls overlying the sandstone platform.
