Summary

No 55-57 Watergate Street Row consisted of a 17th century timber framed town house, demolished in the 1970s and now only known from documentary sources. An article published be Cowley in 1975 documented the relationship between this former town house and the adjacent property – Bishop Lloyd’s Palace – describing it as a 17th century building with a jettied gable end fronting the street and an 18th century brick facade hiding the original timber framing. Few internal features survived at the time of demolition.

Full Description

No 55-57 Watergate Street Row consisted of a 17th century timber framed town house, demolished in the 1970s and now only known from documentary sources.

An article published be Cowley in 1975 documented the relationship between this former town house and the adjacent property – Bishop Lloyd’s Palace – describing it as a 17th century building with a jettied gable end fronting the street and an 18th century brick facade hiding the original timber framing. Few internal features survived at the time of demolition. (1)

It is described in the 19th century as the premises of the former Lamb Row, once owned by Randal Holme in the late 17th century. It was documented that in 1670 Holme was fined by the Corporation for encroaching on the street frontage. (3)
