Summary

No 33 Watergate Street consisted of a four storey, three bay brick town house of a possible 17th-18th century date, the only details now known of the Row level building originate from print evidence and from an article published by Lawson and Smith. There were enclosed steps to Row level on the left side with evidence for masonry in the street level frontage. Print evidence indicates two Tuscan columns and a tunnel balustrade fronting the Row. The upper floors were of plain brick with stone quoins and plain floor bands. Windows consisted of sashes on the first floor, cross windows in the second floor and a single casement in the gable end. Lawson and Smith describe the undercroft as 6.25m wide and 13.4m deep from the front of the Row walkway with walls of large, well-coursed masonry. A later stone extension was inserted forward of the street frontage.

Full Description

No 33 Watergate Street consisted of a four storey, three bay brick town house of a possible 17th-18th century date, the only details now known of the Row level building originate from print evidence and from an article published by Lawson and Smith (2).

There were enclosed steps to Row level on the left side with evidence for masonry in the street level frontage. Print evidence indicates two Tuscan columns and a tunnel balustrade fronting the Row. The upper floors were of plain brick with stone quoins and plain floor bands. Windows consisted of sashes on the first floor, cross windows in the second floor and a single casement in the gable end.

Lawson and Smith describe the undercroft as 6.25m wide and 13.4m deep from the front of the Row walkway with walls of large, well-coursed masonry of probable 15th century date. A later stone extension was inserted forward of the street frontage. (2)

It was subsequently demolished in the 1960s to make way for the current structure. (1)
