Summary

During rescue excavations in the garden of 1 Abbey Green, beginning in 1975, the presence of pits filled with domestic rubbish dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was recorded. The brief reports available state that there were many pits, and deposits, and contained quantities of pottery dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Buckley and Staffordshire plates and jugs from the Rhineland, providing a useful insight in to the standard of living of the inhabitants of the house.

Full Description

During rescue excavations in the garden of 1 Abbey Green, beginning in 1975, the presence of pits filled with domestic rubbish dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was recorded (2). The brief reports available state that there were many pits, and deposits, and contained quantities of pottery dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Buckley and Staffordshire plates and jugs from the Rhineland, providing a useful insight in to the standard of living of the inhabitants of the house (1, 2, 3). While the Roman and Saxon period remains from this site are well published, this is the only information available on these post medieval features.
