Full Description
The Dark Row is a free standing section of Row buildings consisting of an undercroft with a narrow Row town house above separate from the town houses to the rear. Known previously as the Buttershops, the Cook’s Row and the Baker’s Row they have previously formed part of the medieval market of Chester. The earliest references to buildings on this site dates to a deed of 1270. The present arrangement of buildings, although medieval in form, currently dates to the 19th century.
No 9-15 Eastgate Street, formerly the premises of Owen Owen, consists of a four storey town house including the street level undercroft. It is 2m in depth and dates to around 1900, the architect was T.M. Lockwood. The undercroft is entirely modern, while the Row level above contains false timber studwork in a 17th century style. The Row levels above jetty out from the street frontage with square panels of herringbone studwork.
No 15 was formerly the property of Messrs Oakes and Griffiths where a number of Roman finds have occurred. (1)
