Full Description
No 8 Northgate Street is a stone undercroft and three storey town house of probable 19th century date but heavily modified in the 20th century. The town house has both false and structural timber framing in the facade and a Welsh slate roof.
The survey recorded little of note in the undercroft, being modern throughout. The Row level house is also modern with no significant features.
The Row walkway at this point has no stallboard and the modern planked walkway narrows from the north (2.47m) to the south (2.12m). The upper floors are supported by plain timber posts at the north and southern ends with a simple moulded railing at the Row front. (1)
Evidence of medieval stone masonry was noted during renovation of the undercroft in the early 20th century. The undercroft was thought to be approximately 4.87m wide and continued to a point approximately 10.97m from the street frontage. The walls were of coursed stone with regularly spaced corbels. (3)
