Full Description
A possible layer of disturbed moat upcast material was identified within the grassed area adjacent to Grosvenor Road within the grounds of Chester Castle during a watching brief between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city.
In Trench 305, a layer of demolition rubble containing sandstone blocks, thought to be material left over by the works of Harrison on the semi-circular forecourt wall in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The demolition material overlay firm orange clay mixed with dark silty-sand that may have been residual material from the moats excavation during the medieval period (1). No finds were reported.
