Full Description
A wall foundation trench that contained a fill with finds dating from the seventeenth to twentieth century was identified at the north end of Souters Lane during a watching brief between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 190, below cobbled surfaces (dating to the mid-nineteenth or twentieth century) that were sealed by the modern road, was the wall foundation trench. The trench is not described in detail by the project's report, but its fill contained clay pipe stems and clay pipe kiln wasters dating to between the seventeenth and twentieth century. The Newgate clay pipe factory was near this location, and operated between 1787 and 1917 (1).
