Full Description
A pebble surface, was identified during a watching brief along Northgate St., just opposite the Abbey Gate, between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 168x, Context 1196 was seen just outside the abbey gate, and was cosntructed of small pebbles over a crushed sandstone surface (1). Although the recovered finds are reported as unstratified, they included seventeenth century trailed slipware, eighteenth to nineteenth century creamware, and clay pipe stem fragments dating to between the seventeenth to eighteenth century (1).
