Full Description
A post medieval soil layer, seen overlying Roman remains, was identified during a watching brief along Northgate St., just opposite the Abbey Gate between 2009 and 2012 (1). The excavation was carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 168, Context 1194 was a deposit of disturbed dumped material 0.23m deep, containing occasional charcoal, grit, pebbled, and crushed sandstone with occasional sandstone blocks. The excavators speculated that this may have been a road-levelling layer (1).
