Full Description
A wall, in addition to underlying post medieval deposits, were identified during a watching brief along City Walls Road, between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city.
In Trench 138, the wall (Context 1095) was constructed of sandstone blocks, set on a bedding layer (Context 1094), with post medieval deposits overlying (CHER 10629). The wall was aligned north – south and was observed for a length of 4.7m, constructed of dressed sandstone blocks, preserved to at least three courses high. It was set onto a compacted layer containing sandstone fragments, containing seventeenth to eighteenth century pottery, and the excavators concluded that it was either a post medieval retaining wall or a garden wall. The demolished wall was sealed by post medieval demolition waste (CHER 10629).
