Full Description

A possible Roman occupation layer was identified during a watching brief along Foregate St., east of Love St. between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city.

The layer was identified in Trench 183 (Context 1253), was a homogeneous, moderately compact sediment 0.2m deep containing fragments of ceramic building material and pottery dating to between the late first and early fourth centuries (1).
