Full Description

A Roman period pebble surface was identified during a watching brief on the southern side of Delamere St. at the junction of Upper Northgate St. between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 167, the surface (Context 1188) was constructed of small pebbles and occasional fragments of ceramic building material, and was 0.5m deep. A sherd of late first century Cheshire plain greyware and a Holt tegula was retrieved. The surface was sealed by the modern road surface.
