Full Description
No 26 Watergate Street is an undercroft, currently used as a shop, of mid 13th century date with 18th century alterations. The undercroft is around 7.5m wide and 17.5 in length and divided into three zones. There is heavy modern alteration throughout. The interior floor level is 0.5m below the present street level.
The front section is 2.1m high with covered walls and a front facade of 18th-19th century date. The middle section consists of two vaults on a north-south alignment and although the walls are similarly covered there is evidence to suggest they are constructed of brick work on a base of mixed stone and brick. The back section is separated by a stone wall and consists of a single vault on an east-west alignment with walls apparently entirely of brick. This section is believed to be a modern extension. The only part of the undercroft of certainly medieval date is the western party wall with the adjacent property. (1)
