Full Description

What was thought to have been an early eighteenth century rubbish pit was identified during a watching brief at the north end of Nicholas St. Mews, at Watergate St. between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 102 was the large pit (Contexts 1011, 1012), 3m long and over 1m wide, with a depth greater than 0.5m (not bottomed). The single primary fill suggested to the excavators that the pit was used for dumping rubbish in the early eighteenth century (but note no finds belonging to this context are included in the report) (1). The pit was cut by culvert CHER 10622.
