Full Description
No 10 Watergate Street consists of an undercroft, currently in use as a shop, of probable mid 14th century date.
The undercroft appears to be built of stone however only a small section was visible to the rear of the structure. The form of the structure is slightly funnel shaped with a rear width of 9.23m and a front width of 8.5m. The total internal length of the undercroft is 12.85m. The interior floor level is set 0.23m below the present street level.
A survey of the building as part of the Chester Rows Project identified an earlier street frontage in the undercroft approximately 1.07m from the present position by a cross beam now largely concealed by modern timber. A central timber arcade of 4 bays from front to back, now partly damaged, has samson posts of massive scantling, one replaced in brick, one duplicated in brick and one duplicated in timber, carrying an arch-braced bridging joist on which the arch-braced cross-beams, slotted for joists and supported at their outer ends on recent nib walls, are halved. Dendro-chronological analysis of timbers taken from the Deva with six viable samples, one sample was absolutely dated to the period 1437-1509. (1)
