Full Description
What was thought to have been an eighteenth or nineteenth century culvert was identified during a watching brief at the north end of Nicholas St. Mews, at Watergate St. between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 102 was the culvert (Context 1010), constructed of sandstone blocks capping and two single width crick walls. These walls were three bricks high, using unfrogged bricks. The central aperture was 0.2m wide and 0.23m high, with a total dimension of 0.4mwide and 0.35m high. Although no dating material was retrieved, it was thought to have been of mid-eighteenth or nineteenth century date (1). The culvert cut pit CHER 10623.
