Full Description
A post medieval cobbled surface was identified during a watching brief at the junction of Watergate St. and Stanley St. between 2009 and 2012 (1). The investigations were carried out during the installation of gas pipelines and involved a large number of trenches across the city. In Trench 101 was a cobbled surface (Context 1007), of smooth sub-round cobbles, about 0.16m thick. Although no dating material was retrieved, it pre-dated the nineteenth century road surface at this location (1).
