Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the junction of Eastgate Street and St Werburgh Street identified evidence of a stone structure in trench 169. The evidence consisted of several large red sandstone blocks set above a foundation course [context 1206] sealing earlier road surfaces. Although no dating evidence was recovered, it is likely to be post medieval in date, the earlier road surfaces (CHER 10003) contained pottery of a Roman to medieval date. (1)
Additional features recorded in an adjacent trench (trench 176) included a sandstone rubble deposit [context 1221] containing mixed material of a Roman and post medieval date and a large trench [context 1235] of likely recent date (1)
