Summary

A late Saxon pit, cut through soil layers thought to have accumulated after the Roman fortress was abandoned, was found at the site of the Hotel Romano in 1990.

Full Description

During excavations (unpublished) at the site of the Hotel Romano (ECH5367) which followed an evaluation carried out at the same site (ECH3581), a pit containing late Saxon period pottery, cut through 'a number of layers which appear to date from the period after the end of Chester as a Roman fortress and town' were found (1). No other information on the nature of these finds is available.
