Full Description
Slum clearance in the Princess Street area in the 20th century resulted in the demolition of large areas of Victorian and earlier housing in the city centre to the rear of the main streets. 19th century maps of the area depict an extensive area of courts and yards. The clearance was undertaken in several major phases, in 1939 immediately to the rear of the Town Hall and again in the 1960s over the remaining area as far west as St Martin’s Way. Further evidence of 19th century slum dwellings were recorded in the early 1990s during the Forum redevelopment programme. (1)
