Full Description
A building, no longer extant, that is labelled ‘Fletcher’s Almshouses’ appears on the 1871-3 town plan of Chester, in the same location as a similarly shaped and positioned building appears on Lavaux’s 1745 plan of the city (1, 2). Although there is little documentary information relating to this building(s), its location is significant as it overlies evidence of a series of medieval structures (see CHER 10357, CHER 10358, CHER 10359, CHER 10381), and is situated within the area that the tithe barn of St Werburgh’s Abbey (CHER 10355) was reputed to have been located.
<1> de Lavaux, A, 1745, Plan of the City and Castle of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH5255.
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1872-1875, Metric Ten Foot Scale Town Plan of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH6780.
