Summary

A monument dedicated to Stapleton Cotton Viscount Combermere, erected in 1865 is found immediately opposite the entrance to the castle. Viscount Combermere was buried in the former graveyard of St Bridget’s Church, part of which survives below the roundabout at the end of Nicholas St. and Grosvenor St.

Full Description

A monument dedicated to Stapleton Cotton Viscount Combermere, erected in 1865 is found immediately opposite the entrance to the castle. It is a cenotaph equestrian statue in bronze, the horse is at rest but alert with one hoof raised. The inscriptions, on all sides read: ‘ERECTED IN HONOUR OF STAPLETON COTTON VISCOUNT COMBERMERE FIELD MARSHAL’, ‘BORN. 1773. DIED. 1865’, ‘FLANDERS. LINCELLES. THE DOURO. TALAVERA. TORRES VEDRAS, BUSAGO. VILLA GARCIA. LLERENA. CASTRAJON. CUIDAD RODRIGO. ELBODON. THE PYRENEES. ORTHES. TOULOUSE’, ‘CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. MALLAVELLY. SERINGAPATAM. WEST INDIES. BHURTPORE.’ Viscount Combermere was buried in the former graveyard of St Bridget’s Church, part of which survives below the roundabout at the end of Nicholas St. and Grosvenor St. (1, 2).
