Summary

Evidence for post medieval structural activity was recorded during archaeological investigations at 54-60 Foregate Street in 2009. The earliest phase of structural activity consisted of a substantial sandstone wall foundation and two associated sandstone slabs indicating a probable structure. Although dating evidence was limited, these features appear to date to the early post medieval period The early evidence is subsequently sealed by a clay deposit into which a pit feature was cut. The fill of the pit included a small quantity of high quality pottery dated to the 16th-17th century. Overlying the clay deposit, the excavations encountered two contemporary sandstone wall foundations and a brick wall of probable late post medieval date and tentatively associated with the structures recorded on the 19th century maps of the area
