Monument record 10421 - Summer House Belonging to St Martin's Lodge, Nicholas Street

To the north of St Martin’s Lodge, a group of features relating to its construction was identified during an archaeological evaluation carried out in 2011 (1). In Trench 3 was a heavily disturbed wall foundation, together with an associated brick floor surface, can again be confidently identified as belonging to a former structure associated with the Lodge, in this instance a detached coach-house or ‘pavilion’ which stood to the north-east of the Lodge. Trench 6 contained elements of a brick-built structure, the location of which coincides closely with that of ancillary structure constructed up against the northern property boundary of the site and showing on the OS First Edition mapping.

This and the other structures, including that of the coach house, were demolished during the later decades of the twentieth century (1). Other elements that are associated with the Lodge and survive below ground in this area of the site include a soakaway pit, a sandstone capped brick culvert, and at a shallow level, a cobbled surface. St Martin’s Lodge, as a standing monument, is represented by CHER 10422, and its destroyed summer house to the west of the building and west of these remains is CHER 10421.
