Monument record 10431 - Castle Esplanade / Nun's Lane

The former Castle Esplanade, now the southern end of Nicholas St., was, during the medieval period known as Nun's Lane, a direct reference to the presence of St Mary's Nunnery immediately to the west of this road (1, 2, 3). Documents from late in the medieval period refer to it variously as Non Lane, Nonnelane, or the Nunnes Lane, the latter term is how it is marked on Lavaux's plan of Chester (5).
