The earliest documentary reference to Sancti Nicholai Street dates to 1297, with various other references throughout the medieval period through to modern times (1, 3). Speed marks it as St Nicholas Lane (1), while Lavaux's 1745 plan of the city shows this stretch of the street as Nicholas Street (5).
