Monument record 10428 - St Martin's in the Fields / Crofts Lane (Street)

The upper, northern part of St Martin's way had been part of a roadway since the medieval period (1, 2, 3). Previously called St Martin's in the Fields, as it appears on OS First Edition mapping, it was formerly Crofts' Lane, or The Croft's, as it appears on Lavaux's 1745 plan of the city. References to Crofts Lane are known from as early as 1478 (2). The street was roughly north - south and extended from Barne Lane in the north, to the Lower Lane (near the former Linen Hall) to the south.
