Summary

Features of post medieval date were encountered in Trench 1, including a pit and a linear feature of uncertain function. The pit was roughly circular, and contained a small amount of eighteenth century pottery. This pit cut into the linear feature, possibly a gully aligned roughly east – west. Both of these features were cut into a soil horizon that had been sealed by the layer of modern landscaping associated with the construction of the police headquarters building, and was a deposit containing a small amount of sixteenth century pottery thought to represent a garden or cultivation soil.

Full Description

Features of post medieval date were encountered in Trench 1, including a pit and a linear feature of uncertain function. The pit was roughly circular, 1.2 m in diameter, and contained a small amount of eighteenth century pottery (1). This pit cut into the linear feature, possibly a gully measuring 1m wide and aligned roughly east – west and contained small fragments of brick (1).

Both of these features were cut into a soil horizon that had been sealed by the layer of modern landscaping associated with the construction of the police headquarters building, and was a 0.3m thick deposit containing a small amount of early post medieval, sixteenth century pottery (1). It was thought to represent a garden or cultivation soil.
