Please read our .

Summary

Evidence of the 19th century iron foundry and engineering works was recorded during archaeological investigations in the Hunters Walk area. The foundry was built in 1837 by Samuel Perry and continued in use until 1936. The evidence for the foundry included the foundry hearth constructed of brick and sandstone and partially set underground, and the smithing hearth. Archaeological investigations between 1978 and 1982 as part of the Princess Street Central Redevelopment Programme uncovered substantial evidence of medieval and post medieval activity. The excavations covered a substantial area west of Northgate Street between Princess Street and Hunter Street, however although the Roman and Saxon evidence has been published, the medieval and later work remains largely unpublished.
