Summary

Archaeological investigations between 1978 and 1982 as part of the Princess Street Central Redevelopment Programme uncovered substantial evidence of medieval and post medieval activity. The excavations covered a substantial area west of Northgate Street between Princess Street and Hunter Street, however although the Roman and Saxon evidence has been published, the medieval and later work remains largely unpublished. A number of post medieval pits were recorded across the site including a substantial pit containing an assemblage of fine wares and glass wares. Evidence of a 17th century apothecary was also indicated from the glass finds

A number of post medieval pits were recorded across the site including a substantial pit containing an assemblage of fine wares and glass wares. Evidence of a 17th century apothecary was also indicated from the glass finds. (1, 2)

At Hunter Street School, a series of post medieval pits were encountered in trench 6. The pits were largely cess pits containing pottery of a 17th-18th century date. (4)
