Full Description
Traces of probable medieval pits were recorded at the former Telephone Exchange on St John Street in 1963. The investigations were carried out during the installation of a cable chamber at the site and monitored by the Grosvenor Museum.
The evidence consisted of a number of rubbish pits encountered in stanchion holes 9, 10, 14, 18 and 20 along with three more substantial rock cut pits in stanchion holes 16 and 26 tentatively interpreted as tan pits producing fragments of leather from their fills (1)
