Summary

Traces of probable medieval wall foundations were recorded at the former Telephone Exchange on St John Street in 1963. The investigations were carried out during the installation of a cable chamber at the site and monitored by the Grosvenor Museum. The evidence consists of several wall foundations and evidence of possible sandstone metalling possibly indicating a floor surface.

Full Description

Traces of probable medieval wall foundations were recorded at the former Telephone Exchange on St John Street in 1963. The investigations were carried out during the installation of a cable chamber at the site and monitored by the Grosvenor Museum.
The evidence consists of two east-west aligned wall foundations recorded in stanchion holes 2 and 8 dated by the recovery of medieval sherds from the base of the construction cut and evidence of possible sandstone metalling in stanchion holes 3 and 4 possibly indicating a floor surface. (1)
