Monument record 10153 - post medieval soil layer at Northgate Brewery

Archaeological investigations to the rear of the Northgate Brewery Site recorded evidence of post medieval activity. The excavations were carried out by S. Ward & T. Strickland of the Grosvenor Museum following the demolition of the former brewery.

The area to the rear of the brewery, excavated between 1974 and 1975 comprised a discrete area away from the main street frontages. Overlying the Roman deposits, only two distinguishable archaeological layers were recorded, first the possible medieval plough soil, and later a post medieval cultivation soil consisting of a dark, rich soil directly sealed by the 19th century brewery. Material recovered from the layer comprised slate and sandstone fragments and a few sherds of post medieval pottery.
