Full Description
Archaeological investigations to the rear of the Northgate Brewery Site recorded evidence of post medieval activity. The excavations were carried out by S. Ward & T. Strickland of the Grosvenor Museum following the demolition of the former brewery.
The area to the rear of the brewery, excavated between 1974 and 1975 comprised a discrete area away from the main street frontages. Overlying the Roman deposits, only two distinguishable archaeological layers were recorded. The first consisted of a soil layer containing mixed deposits interpreted as a plough soil of probable medieval date. Pottery recovered from the plough soil was predominately 13th-14th century, however some later 15th-16th century fragments were also encountered.
