Full Description

Archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery Site (corner of Northgate Street and Water Tower Street) recorded evidence of limited medieval activity. The excavations were carried out by P.J. Davey of the Grosvenor Museum following the demolition of the former brewery.

A considerable number of medieval pits were recorded across the site including rubbish and cess pits, many of which were partially investigated. The pattern of digging of these pits indicated disposal across the area throughout the medieval period with pits both pre dating the 14th century road (CHER 10004) and post dating it. In one example, a substantial rock cut pit 2.20m by 1.60m cut to a depth of 1m below the natural also included two post holes at the eastern end. (1)
